PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Tamoxifen citrate is one of the most popular anti-estrogen drugs amongst athletes. It is not toxic and it is very efficient in reducing estrogen and blocking it from further action. Tamoxifen citrate has other clinical uses, such as for the treatment of estrogen dependent tumors such as breast cancer in women. However, we will discuss its use within anabolic steroid cycles. Tamoxifen citrate is a potent anti-estrogen agent. Athletes use it for protecting from estrogen side effects that may result after conversion of aromatase enzyme to estrogen.

THERAPEUTICAL INDICATIONS

Tamoxifen Citrate is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) used by the performance enhancers to prevent estrogen related side effects such as gynecomastia, excessive water retention and acne. It is also efficient in the post cycle therapy, and in this sense it is very popular among other SERMs.

DOSES AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION

Tamoxifen Citrate is a drug that comes in form of tablets. It is indicated to take the tablets before administering the steroid, so that by the time you administer the steroid it got a steady plasma level in the blood and respond quickly to blocking the estrogen. Each athlete may even start taking tamoxifen four weeks before starting the steroid cycle. It is recommended to take tamoxifen citrate two times a day. It may be taken with water during meals. It has to be swallowed, not chewed or divided in several doses. The recommended dose is 10-30 mg daily. Generally, even a dose of 10 mg per day is sufficient for providing good results in preventing estrogen related side effects; however, the dose also depends on how strong the anabolic steroid is and how the body reacts to it. This is the reason one may take a higher dose than 10 mg daily.

SIDE EFFECTS

Like any other aromatase inhibitor, Tamoxifen Citrate may cause side effects. These are specific to this category of drugs and may be controlled by decreasing the dose and changing the dosing schedule. Although, there might be side effects that may develop months after tamoxifen citrate was used. The most common side effect with tamoxifen citrate is suppression of natural estrogen levels that may affect the immune system and lipid profile. Usually, this side effect is has an increased incidence when the individual takes the drug for a prolonged period of time. It may also decrease the level of cholesterol and cause cardio-vascular side effects. In order to avoid such reactions, it is recommended to assess periodically the level of cholesterol and other indicators and take immediate action if there is the case.

Other side effects that may occur while on therapy with tamoxifen citrate are related to the tolerance to the drug. Due to the way the body reacts to it one may experience fatigue, stomach upset or unusual abdominal pain, anxiety, headache and others. It is a normal thing, and such adverse reactions are the body’s response to the drug.
